West Ham manager Julen Lopetegui’s job is in “peril” after dire Everton performance, Mark Scott told the BBC.
It’s impossible to overstate how disappointing this start to the season has been for West Ham. They sit in 14th, with just 3 games in 11 Premier League games, they’re out of the Carabao Cup, and fans are already starting to turn on Julen Lopetegui.
The Spaniard was not a particularly popular choice amongst fans, but things have been worrying. While results are not a million miles away from what a lot of people would have expected given their fixtures, it’s the performances that have people concerned.
BBC journalist Mark Scott is not at all surprised over these worries, and he doesn’t believe Lopetegui is doing himself any favours.
“This was a truly dire game that really reflected the apathy around West Ham at the moment,” he wrote.
“The first half felt like an example of what many have been saying about the Hammers’ lack of identity under Julen Lopetegui, who also appeared to struggle to get his messages across to the players in-game from the dugout, as he frantically called for more urgency.”
“While there was an improvement in that aspect after the break, I do not think it was the kind of performance that will quell the whispers about his position being in a fair amount of peril.”
“Based on Saturday’s struggles at home to an Everton not exactly cooking on gas themselves, the exasperation among the fans might turn to worry with games against Newcastle and Arsenal coming next.”
