Jose Mourinho is “very interested” in becoming manager of West Ham United, according to sources close to Football Insider.
West Ham manager Julen Lopetegui has been lucky to escape the sack in recent weeks, a somewhat unlucky 0-0 draw with Everton at London Stadium last weekend gave the Spanish manager what looks like one last chance to turn the clubs fortunes around. However, two defeats in a week to Newcastle and Arsenal could see the end of the former Spain and Real Madrid manager at London Stadium.
There has been growing frustration from the stands at the London Stadium, they have managed just three wins in eleven Premier League matches, and have already picked up too many thrashings. Football Insider have revealed the Hammers are now weighing up a “Plan B”.
That “Plan B” could mean they are going to ditch the approach of playing a more attractive brand of football, like technical director Tim Steidten tried with the hiring of Julen Lopetegui. The Hammers could now look to hire who many people see as the master of defensive football, Jose Mourinho.
The former Chelsea, Tottenham and Man United boss has made no secret of his desire to return to England and has been putting his name in the media to drum up interest. Newcastle United also reportedly hold an interest in the Portuguese manager, however, the Magpies are not planning to part ways with Eddie Howe any time soon, making a move unlikely.
Football Insider sources have said Mourinho would “jump at the chance” to return to London with the Hammers, he still has a house in the capital which would make a move pretty easy for the former Real Madrid boss.
However, despite all of these rumours of a Premier League return. Jose Mourinho is currently under contract at Turkish giants Fenerbache. Jose signed a two year deal in Istanbul just this summer, but it seems like he wants to return to Western Europe and the Premier League specifically.
Mourinho has been outspoken about the possibility of a return to England after initially claiming: “The best thing I have to do is when I leave Fener (Fenerbache) is that I go to a club that doesn’t play in UEFA competition. So a club at the bottom in England who needs a coach in two years, I’m ready to go.“ This was almost a plea for clubs like West Ham United to come and get him, so the news the Hammers are actually interested is far from a surprise.
