West Ham are likely to be able to convince one of their managerial targets to leave his current club.

After a disastrous start to the season which has seen them win just 3 Premier League matches, West Ham are already considering successors to Julen Lopetegui in the event that he gets sacked.

While some of the links are clearly Tim Steidten’s choices, others are obviously David Sullivans, and it doesn’t take a lot to guess which one wants Brendan Rodgers.

Rodgers is currently building a rather exciting project with Celtic, with them sitting 9 points clear of Rangers (although they are on the same points as Aberdeen who have had an unbelievable start to their campaign). However, football finance expert Dan Plumley believes that the Hammers could convince the Northern Irishman to return to England.

“I think you’ve got both sides to that,” he began explaining to West Ham Zone. “In financial considerations, yes, the Premier League clubs would hold more power there financially just given the dynamics of the money in the Premier League versus the Scottish Premiership, so West Ham would have the upper hand in the negotiations.”

“It just depends on how much they want to stretch, but they have that power there over Celtic financially.”

“The other side of that is what are the manager’s intentions there and does he want to move if that situation came to light? I think that is more of a tipping point in terms of what Brendan Rodgers would want to do there over the financial side of it.”

“Ultimately, the way the industry is, the money and the power is far greater in the Premier League than it is in Scotland, at the moment.”

The biggest caveat to all this is the fact that the board hates paying compensation for managers. They’d much rather sign someone who is out of work for free.

Either way, Rodger’s wouldn’t exactly be a groundbreaking appointment and it’s one that would leave many disappointed. However, he may be exactly the sort of manager they need right now and he does seem like a natural successor to David Moyes.
