Julen Lopetegui reportedly has two games to save his job as West Ham become desperate for improvement.

The idea behind getting rid of David Moyes was surely that he had built a strong foundation that another manager could take to the next level. Unfortunately, the board went with the cheap option rather than the best fit and appointed Julen Lopetegui.

As a result, things have gone badly – perhaps even worse than the biggest pessimists in the fanbase would have predicted. The Hammers have won just three Premier League games this season, but it’s the performances that have been worrying. The only game they’ve looked comfortable in is against newly promoted Ipswich, who were playing in League One just two years ago.

This woeful start has left the Spaniard on thin ice, with Jacob Steinberg claiming he has just two games to save his job, “Julen Lopetegui is facing two make-or-break games at West Ham, who have used the international break to explore potential replacements,” he wrote for The Guardian. “Although the club are clinging on to the hope the Spaniard can turn the situation around, belief in the manager is fading and there is a serious prospect of him being fired this month.”

“It is understood much will depend on how West Ham fare when they visit Newcastle on Monday and host Arsenal on Saturday week. Defeats in those matches are likely to have serious ramifications for Lopetegui, who is under extreme pressure after a poor start. There is even the possibility of a heavy defeat by Newcastle forcing West Ham’s hand.”

Both games are obviously extremely tricky, and there’s a good chance the Irons walk away from them with no points. It does beg the question as to why they won’t sack him now? Unless things changed drastically, it’s a matter of when not if so why drag it out when there’s the perfect opportunity to do so with the international break? That would be proactive, something West Ham rarely are.
