West Ham midfielder Edson Alvarez and his Mexico teammates overcame a two goal first leg deficit as they beat Honduras 4-0, securing their place in the CONCACAF Nations League semi finals.
Fulham forward Raul Jimenez began Mexico’s comeback. The former Wolves man rose highest to head home a cross from Jesus Orozco shortly before the end of the first half.
Jimenez would then turn provider. His header across goal from a corner kick was met by Henry Martin who scored Mexico’s second of the night and made it 2-2 on aggregate after 72 minutes.
13 minutes later, Jorge Sanchez solidified his team’s extraordinary turnaround. Collecting the ball in the box, Sanchez fired his strike over the Honduras keeper into the roof of the net making it 3-2 on aggregate. Martin would go on to score his second of the game from the penalty spot late into second half stoppage time This secured a 4-0 win for Mexico and booked their place in the CONCACAF Nations League Semi Finals.
Mexico will play Canada on the 20th of March in the semi finals. The winners of this tie will face off against either the three time winners of the competition the United States or Panama on the 23rd of March. The losers will play earlier on that same day in a third place play off match.
Another Hammer in action for their country during the international break was Lucas Paqueta who came on as a late substitute for Brazil in their World Cup qualifier against Uruguay which ended in a 1-1 draw.
Paqueta entered the field with four minutes of normal time left to play but was not able to help his side snatch a late win. Brazil are currently sat fifth in the CONMEBOL rankings with 18 points, a point behind both Colombia and Ecuador. The top six teams qualify automatically for the 2026 FIFA World Cup which will be taking place in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
