West Ham set to battle rivals for the signature of an 18-year-old Championship attacker.

After a mixed Summer transfer window, West Ham are believed to have readjusted their transfer strategy going forward. A lot of focus will be put on signing players from the second tier of English football as it’s a league that has repeatedly provided them with top players.

As a result, the Hammers are looking at signing Sunderland winger Tom Watson in the coming windows, Graeme Bailey reports.

While the 18-year-old is yet to score his first professional goal, he is already making a great impression during his first real breakthrough season. The Black Cats have enjoyed a great start to the season, sitting just two points of first place in the Championship, so the fact he’s managed to feature in seven games is a testament to the ability he has.

Unfortunately, securing the left-winger’s signature won’t be easy as both Crystal Palace and Tottenham Hotspur are also said to be interested.

Sunderland will be well aware of the potential that he has and this therefore will affect his price. The major of Championship clubs aren’t in the poor financial position they were just five years ago and, therefore, they can hold out to get a players true value rather than give in out of the fear they will miss out on a big payday. With that being said, you’d hope it would still be a fairly low price considering how little playing time, but it won’t be long until he starts making a real impact.

If our Irons do want to sign him, it’s best they act fast as his side’s asking price is only going to get higher as time goes on.
