West Ham face Arsenal this weekend looking to build on the excellent result at Newcastle earlier this week.
Our Hammers walked away with a more-than-deserved 3 points at St James’ Park after producing our best performance of the season to date, however Arsenal are no doubt set to prove a huge obstacle to overcome.
There is no denying that the season has been a slog in east London to date, with underwhelming displays aplenty alongside discipline issues – however Monday night has certainly eased the pressure and breathed much needed belief in east London.
Julen Lopetegui responded to our ambitions for this season in a coy way when asked about our European targets – something Jarrod Bowen has said is the benchmark for this club.
“We don’t think about where we are now, we think about where we can be in the next four months,” Lopetegui told the clubs Official Website. “The end of the season is when we can talk about whether we did well or not – let’s see.
“I always put my focus on the daily work and trying to help my players become a better team. I feel well and always focused on the team and improving.”
Lopetegui will not be in the dugout this Saturday, having picking up a ban following his 3rd yellow card this season. However, the Spaniard is confident it won’t impact the players who will be well prepared… Although he did admit he needs to clean up his act.
“The most important thing is the players, and getting them ready to be able to compete against one of the best teams in the world,” added Lopetegui.
“I am not going to be down there, and maybe I have to improve my conduct. I have three yellow cards, but that is done. I am passionate and sometimes I have said things, but always I try to have respect for the officials.”
A massive game this Saturday no doubt, and one that IF West Ham can get something from, could turn this season on its head.
