West Ham’s 3-1 defeat should be the final nail in the coffin for Julen Lopetegui, but will it be?

After their 5-2 loss to Arsenal, West Ham desperately needed to bounce back against Leicester. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the case.

Despite dominating the ball and having a ridiculous amount of shots, 31 in total, the Hammers were defeated 3-1.

While the stats suggest that the Irons were unlucky, it’s still an awfully frustrating loss and I can’t help but feel like the scoreline wasn’t completely undeserved.

As we’ve seen all season, the defence for whatever reason isn’t able to perform at the level required. The large majority of the goals that have been conceded this season can be pinned on them.

Mavropanos’ poor positioning kept Jamie Vardy onside for Leicester’s opener, while it was all too easy for the Foxes to tear us apart for their second. For their third goal, Max Kilman got foolishly caught out waiting for the ball to fall to him, which allowed Daka to use his lightning pace.

Niclas Fullkrug did manage to grab a goal late on, but it was purely a consolation.

The lack of a suitable system, defensive structure, and energy amongst the side is something that Julen Lopetegui has seen all season, yet he hasn’t done anything to fix it. Losing in that manner to one of the worst teams in the league is absolutely unacceptable. Why the board wouldn’t cut their losses now to try and turn this season around is beyond me, but it’s clear Lopetegui isn’t the man for the job and he never was, yet you can’t help but feel like they won’t do what’s needed. Unfortunately the board went for the cheap option and that’s really come back to bite us, as everyone knew it would.
