Niclas Fullkrug admits that things are just not working at West Ham as the sacking of Julen Lopetegui now feels inevitable.
The 3-1 loss to Leicester City has the overwhelming majority of fans and others in the football world expecting the club to end what has been a disastrous tenure of Lopetegui in east London, although the decision appears yet to be made.
Fullkrug’s return to action with a goal after a long injury lay-off was one highlight in an otherwise dismal night for the club, which has become a custom trait under the Head Coach since his arrival in the summer, with no signs of improving.
German international Fullkrug has lifted the lid and painted a desperate picture, highlighting how the players are just not doing the basics right whilst stating that there is constant dialogue amongst the group of how dire the situation we are in really is.
“The West Ham fans can believe me, we speak a lot about it,” confessed Fullkrug, as reported by the clubs Official Website. “It’s also frustrating for us if we don’t win games like that, and these are opponents we have to win against.
“Sometimes the positioning was not perfect. Sometimes the focus was not perfect, because if you’re one step always too late in some situations, it’s not a snowball effect. It’s like a focus thing, and we have to improve in those situations. We have so many good players.
“We have so much quality in this team. But I think we have to reach much more than the place we are in.”
Fullkrug tried to point to the fact we had the chances to win the game, but the reality is there is more to the story. West Ham were undone by an average-at-best side, who joined many other clubs who took full advantage of some inept play and unworkable tactics.
“It’s crazy how it’s possible that they got three goals and we scored only one, because we had so many chances,” stated the perplexed Fullkrug. “We have so many quality players in every position and today was a very unlucky day.
“But also, we have to be honest with ourselves, there were some details, some small things in the system that weren’t good enough to win a Premier League game.”
Unfortunately, ‘unlucky day’ is no longer going to cut it, much like the ‘we need time’, ‘new players & manager’ lines that have been peddled all season long.
Lopetegui is not right for this football club and the sooner he goes, the better for everyone – including him.
