Julen Lopetegui’s impossible targets to keep his job raises questions as to why West Ham are delaying the inevitable.
The last few days at West Ham have been a circus. Julen Lopetegui should have been sacked, yet the club’s unwillingness to spend money on a decent, long-term replacement means he’s been given the Wolves games on Monday to save his job.
Many expect the Hammers to beat Wolves which will drag this on much longer than it needs to be. However, Sean Whetstone claims he must win four his next five games to keep his job, with the board expecting three points against Bournemouth, Brighton, and Southampton as well.
While this is exactly how it should be considering the start he’s had, it just seems pointless. The chances of him turning things around that drastically are slim to none.
Why the board won’t just do the right thing and sack him is beyond me, but who would really want to work under them? Bar Moyes, no manager has had a particularly good relationship with them and even then the Scotsman was treated awfully during his final season.
Their own actions may be the reason we can’t find a replacement and have had to stick with the Spaniard. They needed to get the appointment right in the Summer to try and push on, but given how drastically that’s failed they need to get the next one absolutely spot on to ensure things do not get catastrophic.
