Julen Lopetegui relief as a dismal West Ham display vs Wolves may be enough to keep him in a job.
West Ham were lucky to be playing one of the worst teams in the Premier League in Wolves. While they did dominate the ball and have the better chances – this says a lot more about the opposition than it does our Irons.
The first-half of football was two struggling sides showing exactly why they’re in the bottom half of the table. Both sides had good chances and although the Hammers had more, Wolves really should have taken the lead with Joao Gomes missing an absolute sitter.
Just 9 minutes after the break, the hosts managed to grab the lead via Tomas Soucek who was left unmarked at the back post from a Bowen corner.
69 minutes into the match Wolves found an equaliser through Doherty, which gave Gary O’Neil a lifeline while giving Lopetegui a headache. However, the away side’s joy was short lived as Jarrod Bowen scored a stunning goal to give his side the lead and all three points.
On paper, this looks like Lopetegui should be given an opportunity, and he probably will be, but it really shouldn’t be the case. The performance was uninspiring, and they were lucky to win the game. Wolves were denied two stonewall penalties by VAR, ones we as West Ham fans would be furious about if they weren’t given to us.
The Spaniard really shouldn’t be in the job still, but the Wolves game perhaps shows this better than any other game. Yes we will pick up results, no we won’t go down, but is that really where the standard is? The board sacked Moyes to kick onto the next level – they need to get rid of Lopetegui before he ruins any chance of this happening. The chances are he’s going to be gone at some point, why delay the inevitable?
