Julen Lopetegui says fan fury is justified, but he remains confident things can be turned around.
West Ham’s shambolic start to the season has put Julen Lopetegui under immense pressure. He seemed certain to get the sack after the Leicester defeat, but he managed to convince the board to give him one more game. A defeat to Wolves will almost certainly see him lose his job.
Fans have become infuriated with the Spaniard, but he understands this and believes they have the right to be so annoyed. “I am not thinking about this [the threat of being sacked],” said Lopetegui. “We’re unhappy and the fans are always right. Until now, they have given us much more than we’ve given them. I won’t talk bad about my players. I accept all the responsibility and pressure.”
“I’m very happy and proud to stay at West Ham. We’re going to change this situation.”
Unfortunately, it’s hard to imagine anything changing. The fact that he’s clearly lost the dressing room makes things near impossible for him to sort out. The board are dragging out the inevitable, the sooner he goes the better. Let’s just hope that if he scrapes a result against Wolves that it won’t be enough, it needs to be convincing.
