Having went into the half time break a goal down, West Ham’s U21 sides excellent second half display saw them secure a 3-1 victory over German side Borussia Monchengladbach in the Premier League International Cup.

After starting the game well going forward, it was German side Monchengladbach who struck first. In the 26th minute, Winger Jonathan Foss guided his effort into the far corner to put the visitors in front.

The young Hammers went into half time 1-0 down. After making two substitutions, Mark Robson’s side came out for the second half re-energised and determined to find a way back into the game.

A much improved second half performance, with goals from Lewis Orford, Luizao and Kamarai Swyer saw the Hammers come from behind to claim a 3-1 win over Monchengladbach. Although West Ham’s hopes of qualifying for the next stage of the competition are not entirely dead, they will certainly be hoping for some good fortune. Mark Robson’s side the remaining four games to all end in draws in order to go through.

Speaking to the Club’s official website, reflecting on a big win for his side after the 21’s had not scored in their last two games and were winless in their last seven, Mark Robson said: “The win tonight puts us back on that winning trail, and the confidence we can take from the performance is huge. The aggression we showed, the fight, that’s what we need to bring into every game.”

West Ham’s U21’s will hope their 3-1 win, their first win since September, will prove to be a turning point, helping them to kick on and get their season back on track.

The young Hammers certainly deserve massive credit. Having been in bad form recently, it would have been easy for the Hammers to let their heads drop and shy away from the challenge having gone a goal down against Monchengladbach. Instead, they rallied together, came out fighting in the second half and ultimately claimed a comfortable 3-1 victory.

Mark Robson’s side can hopefully take the confidence from this win into their next set of League fixtures. They face Stoke next before a slight break, they then play Liverpool and Sunderland five days apart in mid January. West Ham will be hoping to pick up some more positive results in their upcoming fixtures so they can climb up the table and improve on their current league position of tenth.
