West Ham earned a solid point against Bournemouth, but many of the same issues were still present.
Many top teams have walked away from the Vitality with no points this season, so for a struggling West Ham to earn a draw is actually a very good result.
The first-half was rather even, with both sides having some solid chances, but the Hammers coped relatively well with the pressure. A Spectacular Bowen shot from outside the box nearly curled into the top left corner, but it just hit the crossbar. While Bournemouth really should’ve done a better job with some of the space they found themselves in.
Although the second-half was very much dominated by the hosts, a VAR check awarded our Irons a late penalty which Paqueta coolly converted from the spot. Frustratingly, in the 90th minute, Unal scored a world-class free kick in order to secure his side a point.
Overall, the Cherries should have really walked away with all three points, and if it wasn’t for an incredible performance from Fabianski they would have. He made four or five unbelievable saves to keep his side in the game.
Despite it being a good result, West Ham were once again far too open at the back. Bournemouth had 29 shots in total, with 9 of those being on target. It’s something we’ve seen repeatedly under Julen Lopetegui and it has to change.
The performance was certainly an improvement, but there’s a long way to go before the Spaniard can be said to have turned things around.
