In his interview with the Club’s media team after the match, on loan Hammers midfielder Carlos Soler maintained that the West Ham side beaten 5-0 by Liverpool is capable of a lot more than they showed at home against the Premier League leaders on Sunday.
Julen Lopetegui’s side ended 2024 on a sour note. Goals from Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo, Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Diogo Jota saw West Ham fall to a humbling defeat in what was a miserable evening at the London Stadium.
It was not so much the defeat itself but rather the manner of the defeat that left many supporters making the journey home from Stratford angered and frustrated. Having conceded 74 goals last season and had big struggles defensively, not much seems to have changed as the Hammers have already conceded three or more goals on eight occasions so far this campaign.
Speaking after the match, midfielder Soler was honest in his reflection of the Hammers defeat, but insisted that he and his teammates have the ability to perform at a much higher level: “They won the match 5-0, but they could have scored more goals.” said Soler.
The Spanish international went on to add: “We are not this team. We showed before that we are more competitive, more aggressive, and we have to change in this type of match because it’s not the first (time it has happened). We have to change this because we have shown before that we are able to do much better.”
The season so far has certainly been a rollercoaster, the mood around the Club, bar a couple of good results and a handful of decent performances has been pretty negative, many questions have been asked of Hammers boss Julen Lopetegui and there has been much speculation about his future just six months into his tenure in East London.
With the thrashing against Liverpool only adding to the discontent among many supporters and with West Ham having some challenging fixtures coming up in the new year, many will be left questioning where the Hammers next points are coming from.
