The shocking reason that Julen Lopetegui hasn’t been sacked by the West Ham board.
West Ham’s performance under Julen Lopetegui have been completely unacceptable, they should be enough to get him sacked alone, but his relationship with the players, and an abysmal defensive record starts to give the impression that his position is becoming untenable.
Despite this, the board refuse to get rid of him. It’s been assumed that this is due to them wanting to give him a chance, combined with the fact that we’re not in any immediate danger of relegation (although the aim was to be fighting for Europe ahead of the season).
Shockingly though, the Telegraph has reported that the real reason is much more sinister. They claim that the board haven’t sacked him due to fears over breaching PSR. To pay off his contract would cost around £5 million, but his back room staff would also have to go.
While on paper this might seem valid to some, it’s when you take into account that the club have made a £57 million profit this past financial year, as well as financial experts claiming they are still well clear of any PSR breaches.
What makes it even more laughable is the fact that it wouldn’t have taken much more than that to actually get a decent manager who was employed away from their club. If the board hadn’t taken the cheap option, they wouldn’t be in this predicament. However, they did and they are, so they must own up to their mistake by getting in new manager before any hope of saving this season is gone.
