West Ham thrashed for the second week in the row as they begin to set uncomfortably records.
Stats, despite the increased attention being paid to them, do not always tell the full story of a football match. While West Ham certainly did have more chances than Manchester City, there was only ever one team who looked like walking away with all three points.
Savinho absolutely tore Vladimir Coufal to pieces, with his cross in the 10th minute deflecting off the Czech defender’s boot and past Areola.
A mixture of poor defending from Coufal and abysmal keeping from Areola meant Haaland scored City’s second shortly before half-time with a beautiful assist from Savinho, and the two combined again in the 55th minute. Foden put the game to bed just 3 minutes later as the Hammers’ attempt to play the ball out from the back led to a turnove in possession for an easy goal.
West Ham did score a consolation goal via Fullkrug who actually had a rather impressive game despite some limited service.
In Jarrod Bowen’s absence, Mohammed Kudus really needed to step up but he failed to do so. Although the majority of the team weren’t at the races, his performance was particularly disappointing.
The heavy defeat means that that West Ham have conceded more goals at this stage in the season than ever before. On top of this, the more damning stat is that Lopetegui now has a lower win percentage than Avram Grant. The owners famously left it too long to sack Grant, it’s getting to the stage now where it feels like the same could be happening once again.
