West Ham could still sign Marcus Rashford on loan but Manchester United would rather he moved elsewhere.
The idea of West Ham being direct competition to Manchester United a matter of years ago would have been unthinkable. However, they have been fighting each other for European spots the last few years, and now they are battling out slightly lower in the league.
Unfortunately, it’s due to this that Manchester United would prefer Marcus Rashford to move abroad over a move to the London Stadium, according to Stefan Borson, but there’s still hope.
“If you were to go through the Premier League, had Man United not been as close to West Ham in the league table, I think West Ham would historically have been the sort of club they would have wanted to deal with on Rashford,” Borson told Football Insider.
“It’s hard to think United would want to do a deal with any of the other top six. I doubt they would want to do a deal with Newcastle, just because they are effectively a block on United from a Champions League perspective. As crazy as it sounds given the way the league table looks, United have probably not given up on Champions League.”
“You start to get down the list of teams who could even theoretically afford 50 per cent of Rashford’s wages. At 50 per cent of his wages, I would think he would still be the highest-paid player at West Ham. If you go below West Ham, it’s hard to see who else could pay around £160,000 a week. United would obviously prefer the player to be out of the Premier League if they could get somebody to share his wages.”
“I think United’s best prospect is 50 per cent of his wages and no loan fee. It’s going to be difficult to get more from somebody because it’s a huge amount.”
“If they can’t get him out to Italy or Germany and PSG don’t want Rashford, then I think West Ham is a viable proposition.”
Although the striker goes hot and cold, there’s no doubt it would be a real coup of a signing. He’s a massive name with the ability to change games, it’s just that Old Trafford isn’t the right place for him to prove his worth anymore.
