After the Hammers picked up an important three points against Fulham earlier this week, Spanish midfielder Carlos Soler spoke of his delight at scoring his first goal for the Club since joining on loan from PSG in the summer.
Tuesday’s game at home to Fulham marked new Hammers boss’ Graham Potter’s first Premier League game as well as his first home game in charge of the Club since taking over from Julen Lopetegui.
Spanish midfielder Soler opened the scoring for West Ham after 31 minutes. High pressing from the Hammers forced Fulham into an error as Andreas Pereira who gave the ball away, straight into the path of Soler, who’s first time effort from just inside the 18 yard box curled past Bernd Leno and into the back of the net giving West Ham the lead.
Just two minutes later, West Ham extended their lead and made it 2-0. Soler played a part in this goal too, his cross found Aaron Wan Bissaka, the full back cut the ball back to Tomas Soucek who guided the ball high into the net sending the home fans wild.
Fulham pulled a goal back early in the second half thanks to Alex Iwobi. West Ham’s pressing once again forced Fulham into an error. Danny Ings pressed Bernd Leno who passed the ball straight to Lucas Paqueta who then guided the ball into an empty net.
Iwobi scored a second after 78 minutes setting up a nail biting end to the game for West Ham. Thankfully, the Hammers did enough to hold on and claim all three points in Graham Potter’s first Premier League game in charge of the Club.
Speaking to the Club’s official website about his first goal for the Club, Soler said: “I was working hard since I arrived here. I played in the last eight to ten games and I started to play with more consistency in the team, but I didn’t score. I had so many chances in a lot of games, so I’m very happy because it was the first time I had scored.”
Soler took time to adapt to the Premier League. However, more recently, the Spanish midfielder has impressed, emerging as one of the few bright spots in what has been a difficult season for West Ham. Having finally scored his first goal in Claret and Blue, hopefully this can see the Spanish midfielder continue to improve and play an important role in the Club ending the campaign in a stronger league position.
The win against Fulham was an important and much needed three points for West Ham. Despite Graham Potter having only been in the job for a week, it already feels as though there is a renewed sense of hope and optimism around the Club. Following up Tuesday’s performance with a win against Crystal Palace would be massive.
The Hammers are yet to pick up back to back wins in the Premier League. Another win on Saturday would only add to the positivity around the Club and help fans begin to look up the table rather than over their shoulders.
