West Ham’s woeful defeat to Crystal Palace shows why they desperately need another rebuild.
After a couple of solid performances, it’s straight back down to reality for West Ham. Although Graham Potter has little responsibility, it would have been an extremely frustrating watch for him.
Simply put, the players didn’t look up for it and they need to have a long look at themselves if they are to even avoid defeat next weekend.
Both teams didn’t particularly look like scoring in the first-half, although Crystal Palace were certainly the better side.
However, some woeful defending, particularly from Mavropanos who had another torrid game, allowed Palace to take the lead shortly after the break via a Mateta.
On the 80th minute mark, Mavropanos received a second yellow card for foolishly booting an opposition player in the face, reducing the Irons down to 10 men and leaving him suspended for their trip to Villa Park (although with the way he’s been playing this might actually be a good thing).
Fabianski decided to have his turn at messing up by not only giving away a penalty when he should’ve just stood his ground, but also by absolutely fumbling the penalty which snuck under him.
While there were underperformers like Mavropanos, Cresswell, and Rodriguez that do not necessarily come as a surprise, it’s their best players not performing which really hurt them.
Kudus, Alvarez, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Paqueta were all simply not at the races, admittedly to varying degrees, and this simply isn’t acceptable. When some of your best players are out injured, you need those sorts of individuals to step up. The fact that they showed so little fight was really infuriating.
