West Ham Women fought till the final whistle on Sunday but sadly fell to a 1-0 defeat in the WSL away against Liverpool.

Leanne Kiernan, formerly of West Ham, put Liverpool ahead after 33 minutes. The forward’s delicate flick went past Hammers keeper Kinga Szemik and proved enough to secure all three points for The Reds.

Before Liverpool’s goal, West Ham had enjoyed a good spell in the game where they had a couple of opportunities of their own to take the lead with both Viviane Asseyi and Shekiera Martinez going close.

Rehanne Skinner’s side had an excellent chance to level the tie and secure a point in second half stoppage time but the chance went begging after Japan international Riko Ueki blazed the ball over the crossbar from close range.

Speaking to the Club’s official website after the game Hammers boss Rehanne Skinner said: “i think the players worked incredibly hard from start to finish. Everybody contributed really well, and I thought we created a lot of good opportunities in the final third. I think I thought we deserved a bit more out of the game, but we just have to be more ruthless around the box.”

West Ham will be disappointed having suffered back to back defeats against Liverpool. A closely contested 1-0 loss is a significant improvement on an incredibly disappointing 5-0 thrashing last time out in the FA Cup. The Hammers must quickly shift their attention with a League Cup semi final against WSL leaders Chelsea on the horizon.

Rehanne Skinner’s side will need to be clinical with the chances that fall their way and remain defensively resilient if they are to do the unthinkable and pull of a massive upset to reach the final of the competition.
