Manchester United have once again been linked with a move for Jean-Clair Todibo this summer, Ruben Amorim is keen to bring the Frenchman to Old Trafford, according to GIVEMESPORT.
Todibo has had a difficult start to his time in East London after arriving on an initial loan from Nice. At first, Lopetegui didn’t pick him due to ‘fitness’, then after some promising matches, he began to look a bit shaky. The 25-year-old then picked up a muscle injury towards the end of Lopetegui time at the club meaning he is yet to play under Graham Potter.
United have had a long standing interest in Todibo, and reports suggest that that interest has remained despite the club now being managed by Ruben Amorim. The Red Devils wanted to bring Todibo in this summer, however, the move wasn’t able to go ahead. The Red Devils owner Jim Ratcliffe also owns OGC Nice and he agreed to not sign players from the club for Manchester United until 2025, following UEFA’s decision to allow United to participate in European competitions next season alongside their sister club.
Despite not being confirmed yet, Todibo is all but a permanent West Ham United player. So, if United really do want to sign the Frenchman they will have to sign him from West Ham, which would make it a lot more expensive than buying from their sister club Nice. This would make a deal a lot more unlikely to happen, as West Ham would demand more than the £27m he will be signed for.
In my opinion, it would come as a shock to see United and Ruben Amorim make a move for Todibo. Despite the whole of Europe knowing about his talent and potential for a number of years now, it wouldn’t make much sense after seeing his performances in a West Ham shirt so far.
The Frenchman has made 17 appearances for West Ham so far, totaling 1000 minutes of football. He has had a couple of pretty decent performances in this time including his debut in the 1-1 draw with Brentford and in the 4-1 win over Ipswich at London Stadium.
However, he was also a part of the majority of the matches we were defeated heavily in under Julen Lopetegui. He started in the 4-1 defeat to Tottenham which was probably his worst game in claret and blue, the 3-0 defeat to Forest, 5-2 against Arsenal, the 5-1 cup defeat to Liverpool and his final match before injury and Lopetegui’s final match as West Ham manager, the 4-1 defeat to a struggling Manchester City.
While Todibo definitely doesn’t take all of the blame for these results, Max Kilman has managed to impress fans a whole lot more than Todibo since arriving this summer. However, with the Frenchman set to return to fitness this weekend, he will get a new lease of life after struggling to get on with Lopetegui. Graham Potter will know all about Jean-Clair Todibo and will be desperate to use him.
Todibo will slot into the back three on either the right side or the middle, both positions will give him the best opportunity to prove what he can do in the Premier League, and maybe then Manchester United will make a move for him in the summer. However, at the moment it remains to be seen whether that would even be an upgrade going into next season. West Ham currently sit a point below United, and we have shown a lot more signs of improvement since Potter has arrived than they have under Amorim.
