West Ham will hold out for big money for an outcast defender in the Summer.
Despite some signs of being a top player, Nayef Aguerd’s game had consistent big mistakes in it which cost West Ham a lot last season.
As a result, he was allowed to leave on loan to Real Sociedad for the 2024/25 season. Shockingly though, Aguerd has gone to Spain and been one of the best defenders in the league, keeping 17 clean sheets and conceding just 18 goals.
Whether or not this is due to the slower pace of La Liga is unknown, but the Hammers shed a real dilemma on their hands: do they keep him and hope he can replicate his form in the Premier League under a different system, or do they sell him to make sure his value doesn’t drop if he has a poor season.
Ultimately, the only thing that is certain is that the club will not let him leave for cheap this Summer, reports have claimed.
For me, it’s a tough one as he was absolutely woeful for West Ham, even when things were going relatively well at the start of last season. With that being said he clearly doesn’t suit a system that is constantly soaking up pressure, and particularly in a back three under Potter he could be just as good as he’s been abroad.
