West Ham lucky to escape with just a 1-0 defeat at home to Brentford.
As is often the case for teams playing Brentford, West Ham found themselves behind very early on. Areola appeared to pull off an unbelievable triple save, but after fans began applauding his effort they were silenced by the ref signalling for a goal.
Brentford came close to finding their second a number of times, having had goals disallowed by VAR on multiple occasions.
The Hammers were sloppy, lacked energy, and just were not good enough. Brentford may have played well, but the hosts made it so easy for them.
Fortunately, Graham Potter realised he has got the set up completely wrong and made three substitutes at half-time. This resulted in a much more organised and attacking West Ham who actually played very well.
Disappointingly, their final ball was still lacking though, and they still never really came all that close to scoring.
As frustrating as it is, it’s likely that much of this season is going to be the same. Potter needs the Summer window to get the players he wants in and to really set up the system he desires. There’s certainly signs to be excited over in that second-half, but the damage of Steidten and Lopetegui has been done.
