West Ham’s U21s extended their unbeaten run to seven league matches after their 1-0 win over Derby County.

A beautiful strike from Tyrone Akpata just before half time proved to be enough for the Hammers, as another disciplined defensive performance meant Mark Robson’s side held on to secure the three points.

The Hammers had to withstand some early pressure from Derby, a crucial intervention from Airidas Golambeckis and an excellent save from Lanre Awesu kept the hosts at bay. Mark Robson’s side grew into the game as the first half wore on. Not long before half time, Tyrone Akpata put the Hammers in front. Sean Moore laid the ball into Akpata’s path on the edge of the box, the midfielder curled his effort first time into the top corner to give West Ham a 1-0 advantage going into half time.

After the half time break, Lanre Awesu was called upon again and forced to make another important save to protect West Ham’s lead. Mark Robson’s side had chances to extend their lead in the second half, but ultimately Akpata’s goal in the first half was enough to seal the victory.

The win against Derby meant West Ham’s U21’s are now six points clear of Southampton in fourth, it also secured the young Hammers a post season play off place with four games still to be played.

West Ham once again showed their defensive solidity, these kinds of qualities will be important going into the play offs. Keeping eight clean sheets in 16 league games is no easy task, alongside a solid backline, the Hammers also possess plenty of quality higher up the pitch to cause opponents problems as proved by Tyrone Akpata’s moment of brilliance against Derby.

With some excellent form behind them, Mark Robson’s side will be looking to end the regular season strongly, they will be hoping they can take this momentum with them in to the post season play offs.
