West Ham United want to sign Angel Gomes on a free transfer after already moving to sign his current Lille teammate, Jonathan David.
The Hammers could be set for a huge reshuffle in midfield this summer as Graham Potter looks to bring in some more of his own players ahead of next season. Angel Gomes could be the ideal man to start that with.
The former Manchester United midfielder is exactly the type of player the former Brighton manager wants in his West Ham team—a deep-lying playmaker who can control the tempo of the game.
At just 24 years old, available on a free and experienced in English football, Angel Gomes could be the perfect signing for Graham Potter and Kyle Macauley.
It will be interesting to see if new England boss Thomas Tuchel names Gomes in his first England squad later this month, and who knows, if he does, maybe Jarrod Bowen can put in a good word with the midfielder.
Aston Villa, Tottenham, and Manchester United have also been credited with interest in Gomes, who has also been linked with a move to the Bundesliga. Gomes has suffered from a lack of game time at Lille this season and was left on the bench for their RO16 Champions League draw against Borussia Dortmund during the week. He is a lot more likely to start with Graham Potter at West Ham than he would be at other clubs.
One player that hasn’t suffered from a lack of game time at Lille this season, despite his contract expiring, is Jonathan David, who looks to be the Hammers’ top striker target this summer. But a move for the Canadian looks a lot more unlikely than Gomes at the moment due to the other clubs interested. As well as West Ham, Arsenal, and Barcelona are amongst the teams interested in offering him a contract.
