An 87th minute goal from opponents Leicester City saw West Ham’s U21 side beaten 3-2, in their first loss at home of 2025.

Josh Ajala’s well taken strike gave the young Hammers the lead, but Jake Evans levelled the tie after a blocked shot fell into his path making it 1-1 going into the half time break. Kaelan Casey headed home meeting a corner kick from Lewis Orford to put West Ham back in front, but visitors Leicester responded quickly to level the tie once more. Jeremy Monga drove into the box with the ball before firing home past Fin Herrick to make it 2-2.

The Hammers had a golden chance to put themselves back in front after Lewis Orford won a late penalty. Leicester keeper Steve produced a vital save, denying Lewis Orford from 12 yards and keeping the game tied at 2-2.

Just minutes later, Leicester hit West Ham on the counter. Monga played in Josh King, holding off his marker, the forward struck his effort past Hammers keeper Fin Herrick, securing victory for Leicester and handing the Hammers their first loss at home of 2025 and their first against an academy side since December. Despite the disappointment of the defeat, West Ham’s U21’s side remain in a strong play off position.

Reflecting on his side’s first defeat in nine games, Mark Robson admitted his disappointment at some of the defensive lapses during the game but discussed his pride at the position the Hammers find themselves in with the season drawing to a close and the play off’s on the horizon.

“We were a little disappointed in our defending for the first goal and definitely for the second goal. We could have avoided them. It’s a disappointing result because we’ve been on such a good run, but the boys have been excellent.” said Robson.

The U21’s lead coach went on to add: “It’s been a really good run. We’re really pleased with the boys, really proud of what they’ve done so far. We’ve put ourselves in a really good position with the performances we’ve had throughout the season.”

Despite the setback, West Ham’s U21 side remain in a strong position as they head into the final stretch of the season. Defensive lapses proved costly on the night, but the Hammers form has been impressive, securing a play off place with games to spare. With a number of players earning international call ups and some receiving first team opportunities, the bigger picture is still incredibly positive.
