West Ham United want to sign Burnley defender Maxime Esteve this summer, according to a report from Alan Nixon.

Esteve has been a long-term target for the Hammers after being linked with a move early last summer before signing Max Kilman. The French defender has really stepped up his game this term, being a crucial part of the meanest defence in the Championship.

The Clarets have only conceded 11 goals in 38 matches so far this season with Esteve starting in every single one. They recently set a second-tier record of 27 clean sheets after their 2-0 win against Swansea on Saturday, with eight games left of the season.

The Olympic silver medallist is a player that would really thrive in a system like Graham Potter’s style of play. As well as his obvious defensive qualities and his 6’4 frame , Esteve is brilliant on the ball. His passing and ability to dribble the ball out of the back is what makes him stand out

The former Montpellier man is also left-footed which means he would fit perfectly next to Kilman who has been playing well in the middle of the back three and Todibo who is starting to shine on the right side. If the Hammers decide to sell Nayef Aguerd upon his return, Esteve could be a great option to replace the Moroccan.

A report from Alan Nixon via Patreon suggests the Hammers are hoping Scott Parker’s side miss out on promotion so they can snap up the 22-year-old for a lot cheaper than they would be able to get him for if they become a Premier League club.

Burnley are currently two points off Leeds and Sheffield United who currently joint top of the table, so they are well in the title race. However, if they finished third anything could happen in the playoffs even if they are the clear favourites. So, Esteve could well be a available in the summer.
