West Ham United have appointed a new executive director after his impressive work spearheading the clubs commercial operations.

The Hammers want to increase their commercial revenue as they look to complete financially with the countries biggest clubs. The club posted a record-breaking revenue last season as their turnover for the year was 269.8 million.

That surge in revenue was boosted by a £6.8m commercial increase on the season previous, which has been largely aided by the head of the club’s commercial operations, Nathan Thompson.

Keith Wyness, a football consultant and former Everton CEO has been impressed with Thompson’s work. He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I don’t know Nathan personally, but I’ve seen some of his work and he’s been very active in the sponsorship market.

“I think he’s done well. I think he’s increased revenue in the commercial side in some very innovative ways. I haven’t seen the actual numbers of some of the deals, but they’re certainly creative and I like the look of what he’s been trying to do.”

Thompson’s hard work has been rewarded, he has been appointed an executive director at the London Stadium earlier this week.

Wyness said: “In terms of being an executive director, I think that obviously West Ham know that the increasing revenue is crucial.

“It’s important that they’ve rewarded his work by giving him a bigger voice at the big table, so I think that’s great.

“I think commercial directors are often overlooked, but if he’s got the right managerial sort of skills, then he should be going up to a higher level.

“West Ham have always had a managing director position rather than a chief executive and it seems that he would be in line for that right now.”
