The Hammers came from behind to draw 2-2 with WSL leaders Chelsea at the weekend. The game at Kingsmeadow was a special day for Japan international Riko Ueki as she celebrated her 50th appearance in Claret and Blue.
The 25 year old signed for West Ham in September 2023 from Japanese side Tokyo Verdy Beleza. Since joining the club, Ueki has been an ever present for Rehanne Skinner’s side, featuring in every WSL game under the Hammers boss. In her 50 appearances for the Club, the forward has scored 12 goals in all competitions to date.
In the game away against Chelsea, Ueki helped the Hammers find a way back into the game assisting Shekiera Martinez’ first goal just before half time. Ueki, Martinez and Viviane Asseyi played together in a front three at the weekend. The forwards have linked up well in recent weeks with the Hammers in a good run of form.
Discussing her assist and playing alongside Martinez and Asseyi with whufc.com, the Japan international said: “In training, I always try to pass to her (Shekiera Martinez). I was thinking, ‘Where is Sheki?’. I couldn’t really see her when I passed it, but I knew where she was going to be. It was a great goal !”
Ueki added: “They are strong players. Viv’s (Asseyi’s) hold up play is great, and Sheki has great physicality, and I want to collect it (the ball) too, so we are very hard working.”
When told post match she had reached 50 appearances in Claret and Blue, the Japanese forward was surprised and certainly very proud of her achievement. “I love this team, so I’m happy to have played 50 games for West Ham. I’m quite surprised it’s gone that quickly !” said Ueki.
