A hard fought 1-0 win against Norwich saw West Ham’s U18 side get back to winning ways on Saturday.
Josh Landers’ second half strike proved the difference in what was a closely fought match between the two sides. The Scottish forward pounced on a misplaced pass from the Norwich keeper and fired home with his weaker foot. Landers missed a good opportunity earlier in the game, the chance came thanks to some excellent build up play from Elisha Sowunmi and Lewis Beckford.
Norwich had a few half chances of their own but were unable to make the most of them. The visitors were given a lifeline late on with a penalty and a chance to equalise. West Ham keeper Fin Hooper made a crucial save to protect his side’s advantage.
The young Hammers held firm as the game drew to a close, with a resolute defensive performance and great in game management ensuring they held on to secure the three points.
Speaking after the game, U18s lead coach Lauris Coggin was pleased his side were able to get the win and a clean sheet. “A clean sheet has been something we’ve been working towards for a number of weeks.” said Coggin.
The U18’s lead coach added: “We were really dominant with the ball. To show grit and determination and intelligence in the final minutes to see out the game was really pleasing.”
Coggin was also full of praise for goalkeeper Fin Hooper’s performance after the 17 year old’s penalty save: “Really pleased with Fin stepping back into the team, showing his quality in an important moment for everyone.”
West Ham’s U18’s are back in action on Saturday at Little Heath Training Ground. The Hammers face Reading and will be looking to build on their win over Norwich.
