West Ham Women’s forward Riko Ueki entertained the crowd with an exciting display in the Hammers draw against Manchester United at the weekend.
The 25 year old played together with Shekiera Martinez and Viv Asseyi, forming the Hammers forward line. Ueki was a nuisance for United’s defenders all afternoon. Some standout moments included producing two clever nutmegs as well as a clever flick past Maya Le Tissier to spark a Hammers attack.
Despite the game ending in a goalless draw, it was an entertaining affair at the Chigwell Construction Stadium. Both sides had goal scoring opportunities that could have sealed them the win.
Speaking after the game, the Japan international praised the Hammers defence for remaining strong and resolute against third placed Manchester United. Rehanne Skinner’s side are enjoying a good run of form, unbeaten in their last four and losing only one of their last five matches.
West Ham deserve plenty of credit for their recent form having played all of the WSL’s current top four teams in their last five games.
Reflecting on the Hammers recent form, Ueki, who was named player of the match for her performance against United said: “Our last four games were brilliant results, and this afternoon as well, so I’m happy,” as reported by the clubs Official Website.
Ueki went on to add: “I’m so proud of the team. They had chances but our defence did well. Of course we want to score, but it’s a good point.”
The Japan international is also enjoying playing alongside Shekiera Martinez and Viv Asseyi in West Ham’s forward line in recent weeks. Ueki highlighted the importance of good communication and hard work as being key factors in helping the trio link up well on the pitch.
“I know they (the rest of the West Ham forward line) are strong, so every day we ‘re talking to each other, today we worked hard together, which is good.”
