West Ham Women’s manager Rehanne Skinner was full of praise for her side after their ruthless attacking performance after they demolished Crystal Palace 7-1.
It was certainly a dominant display from the Hammers when they faced Crystal Palace. Scoring 7 goals, they set a new Club record for their biggest WSL win. In the match itself, Shekiera Martinez was West Ham’s standout performer. The forward scored four goals, netting a first half hat trick and bagging her fourth of the afternoon just after the hour mark.
This was before Viviane Asseyi scored the Hammers fifth, a stunning strike from distance. Second half substitute Emma Harries scored twice late on, her first, an excellent strike that sailed into the top left corner, before rolling the ball into the empty Palace net after good work from Princess Ademiluyi. All in all it was a fantastic performance from Rehanne Skinner’s side who extended their unbeaten run to five games.
Skinner was quick to credit West Ham’s player of the match Shekiera Martinez after her outstanding display having netted four goals: “Shekiera’s got four goals, different type of goals as well” said the Hammers boss.
“She was the number nine that we wanted to bring in, and it’s because of the way she plays off those other players.” added Skinner. The Hammers boss also praised the forward’s technical quality: “Technically, she’s superb. She just knows exactly where the goal is and just has the confidence to score.”
The Hammers boss also gave a special mention to French forward Viviane Asseyi, whose outstanding long range strike was the pick of the bunch among West Ham’s seven goals: “I think it’s going to be a Goal of the Month one for sure.” said Skinner, going on to add: “The technique she used was superb. When she backs herself in those situations, you think she’s going to score anyway.”
With the end of the season approaching, Skinner emphasised the importance of her side making their results in these last few league games count: “In order to compete in this league, we can’t just get a point against City or United, we’ve got to be able to make sure that we get these results, and that then makes a difference in the table.”
