Speaking after the game, Shelina Zadorsky expressed her frustration after West Ham Women saw their five game unbeaten run come to an end with a 3-2 loss in their last home game of the season against Aston Villa on Sunday.

Rehanne Skinner’s side fell behind after just five minutes thanks to a goal from Villa striker Ebony Salmon. The Hammers did not let this set back cause their heads to drop, and 15 minutes later they were back in the game. Shekiera Martinez equalised for West Ham, bagging her 10th goal in just 11 WSL appearances since returning to the Club in January following a loan spell.

Riko Ueki gave the Hammers the lead 34 minutes in after an excellent assist from captain Katrina Gorry. Visitors Aston Villa flipped the game on it’s head either side of half time. Rachel Daly’s goal just minutes later meant the first half ended 2-2.

Nine minutes in to the second half, Chasity Grant fired home to give the visitors a third goal and put them back in front. Villa did enough in the remainder of the second half to hold on to their lead and claim the three points.

That result condemned the Hammers to only their third loss at home all season. Canada international Zadorsky was disappointed the Hammers were unable to score an equaliser and get something from the game. Despite a first loss in five, defender Zadorsky still felt there were positives to be taken from the Hammers display.

“Obviously as a defender, I’m frustrated with the goals conceded, but on the flip side, we’ve had great home form this season, so there are positives in the game, but we want to win as much as we can, so it’s a little frustrating.” said Zadorsky.

Zadorsky continued: “It’s frustrating, but on reflection throughout the week, we’ll be able to make small changes, and it doesn’t take away from the amazing wins we’ve had and points we’ve picked up this season.”

The Hammers defender spoke of the team’s motivation to put the Villa result behind them and end the season with a win away against Leicester in their final league game of the season. “I think we bounce back from this, and then find a way to win in the next game.” said Zadorsky.

It wasn’t to be the ending the Hammers would have hoped for in their last home game of the season in front of their supporters. That being said, with one final test in front of them, Rehanne Skinner’s side will want to end their season with a win and take that momentum with them going in to next season.
