After a first win at Old Trafford in the Premier League since 2007, Alphonse Areola wants his West Ham teammates to take the momentum from Sundays win over the Red Devils forward into the Hammers final two Premier League matches.
Areola certainly played his part in helping the Hammers secure a historic and much needed three points. The French shot stopper made some phenomenal saves as West Ham secured their seventh clean sheet of the season. One of Areola’s stops saw him astonishingly keep the ball out of the net after Danish striker Rasmus Hojlund was unable to convert from close range.
A 9th goal of the season from Tomas Soucek and a second half strike from West Ham skipper Jarrod Bowen were enough to see Graham Potter’s side seal the win. The win was West Ham’s first at Old Trafford in 18 years, it also meant the Hammers have done the double over Manchester United having beat the Red Devils at the London Stadium earlier in the season.
Sunday’s victory saw the Hammers move up to 15th, just a point behind Wolves in 14th. Prior to the United game, West Ham had not won in the Premier League since the end of February.
Reflecting on the win over United, France international Areola was proud of his teammates, pleased he could play his part in an important win, and is hopeful the Hammers can take this momentum forward into their two remaining matches.
“Today I’m happy I’ve done my job. The team did an amazing job from the first moment to the end, and I think we fully deserved that win.” said Areola to the clubs Official Website.
Areola continued: “We worked so hard to get the result, and I think we have to enjoy the moment of winning against a big team in a big stadium.”
The Hammers shot stopper believes the squad must match that level of performance in their remaining two fixtures in order to end the season on a positive note: “Now, we have to move forward and show the same things in the weeks we have left. There are two games, and we’ve shown today what we can do, so we want to make sure we have a strong end to the season.”
Sunday’s win was massive for Graham Potter and his players. Picking up an important three points away at Old Trafford has also put a smile back on the faces of Hammers fans in a season where there has not been much to smile about.
West Ham face Nottingham Forest at home this weekend before travelling away to play already relegated Ipswich in their final game of the season. Forest have had a great season, but Nuno Espirito Santo’s side’s form has not been the best in recent weeks, so there will be a renewed sense of optimism amongst Hammers fans that Graham Potter’s side will be able to get something from that game.
If the Hammers secure at least a point against Forest and beat Ipswich away, they will have a good chance of finishing the campaign in a slightly more comfortable mid table position, and ending what has been a disappointing season on a positive note.
