West Ham are interested in signing German forward Jonathan Burkardt from Mainz this summer, according to Sport Bild.

West Ham will almost certainly sign a striker this season, and much like last season, they could dip into the Bundesliga market as Mainz striker Jonathan Burkardt is reportedly a target for Graham Potter.

At 24 years old, Bukardt is the type of age the new management team wants to bring to the club; young, hungry and got a point to prove. The German is reportedly available for transfer this summer after Mainz blocked his exit in January.

Bukhardt has been in sensational form this season, he’s fourth in the Bundesliga goal scorer rankings with 17 goals behind just Harry Kane, Serhou Guirassy, and Patrick Schick.

In all competitions, Bukardt has bagged 18 goals and provided 3 assists in 29 matches, making him one of the most feared strikers in Germany.

He has been the most important part of Mainz’s incredible season, which could end in a Europa League spot. They are currently sitting 6th in the league.

Bukardt has scored 32% of his team’s goals this season, the most of any player from any team in the Bundesliga. This shows the 6ft striker can take responsibility when he’s needed, something we’ve really lacked since Declan Rice left the club.

The forward has been linked with a whole host of clubs already: Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United, Liverpool, Bayer Leverkusen and Eintracht Frankfurt are reportedly interested.

It will be a huge coup for the Hammers if they can beat this calibre of clubs to his signing, but in out current state, it looks highly unlikely for the £35m rated German to become a Hammer.
