Edson Alvarez will likely be part of a reshuffle at West Ham this season, as the Mexican speaks on a move away from East London.
Edson Alvarez is a player that has divided the West Ham fanbase since his arrival in the summer of 2023. Signed by Moyes, the now 27-year-old had a solid first season under the Scotsman. While it was clear he wasn’t going to be Declan Rice, he helped us cope with losing our talisman.
However, since Moyes left the club, like many others, he has struggled this season. Julen Lopetegui couldn’t get the balance of his midfield right at all, it was getting completely overrun in almost every game.
While Potter hasn’t exactly turned it around, we are a lot more competitive in every game now. But, unfortunately with Potter looking like he’s going to stick with the three at the back and two in midfield, Alvarez doesn’t really fit into his plans.
In a recent interview, Alvarez didn’t rule out a move away from East London, he said: “There’s always going to be a lot of buzz around you, in the sense that there will always be options. I’m a West Ham player. I feel very happy, but this is football; it can change at any moment. I want to be mentally prepared for whatever may come.”
His lack of pace, quality on the ball and agility has been highlighted this season and it’s probably the right time to move him on and spend the money on a more mobile ball-carrier in midfield, which we have really lacked since Rice left.
We are unlikely to get the £32m back we paid Ajax for Alvarez, however, if we can get around £25m it wouldn’t be bad business. Alvarez is still only 27, Mexico captain and has a great reputation from his Ajax days, I’m sure the midfielder won’t be short of suitors this summer.
A fresh start in the Bundesliga looks the most likely with Bayern Munich the most likely destination at the moment, it also wouldn’t be a surprise if Borussia Dortmund reignite their long-term interest in the midfielder.
