West Ham United may have a huge problem between the sticks next season as Fabianski will depart, and Areola stays.
Graham Potter and West Ham could be full or regret after deciding to stick with Alphonse Areola and deciding to let Lukasz Fabianski leave on a free.
French goalkeeper Alphonse Areola is far from a bad keeper, but his lack of quality in distribution makes him a pretty bad goalkeeper for Graham Potter, which we saw as he gave Nottingham Forest a goal on Sunday.
Reports are suggesting Potter would like to bring in a new keeper to compete with Areola, but with the supposed lack of funds at the club, I cant see us paying big money for a goalkeeper with Areola’s big wages on the books, which would probably mean Areola will be the man in between the sticks come August.
In my opinion, we should have kept Fabianski and planned to sell Areola in the summer, Fabianski is the perfect back-up, he’s 40-years-old so he will be fine with not playing, and he has been for the last couple of seasons, he’s been at the club seven years already and he’s a leader in the dressing room.
Areola on the other hand, if we do end up spending money on a keeper, he will not be happy being a back-up goalkeeper again, like he was in his younger years with PSG and Real Madrid, certainly not at West Ham.
So either way, as harsh as it may sound on one of our Conference League winning heroes, I think West Ham going into the season with Alphonse Areola in the squad is the wrong decision. He is exactly the sort of player we need to think about moving on in the transfer window.
