West Ham’s priority this Summer HAS to be a new goalkeeper.
Lukasz Fabianski has been an unbelievable keeper over the years for the Hammers. When he was signed, many fans (myself included) were pessimistic about him becoming first choice, but he proved every single doubter wrong.
Unfortunately, his time in East London has come to an end, but it’s been Areola who’s been first choice for some time now. This simply can’t be the case for next season.
The Frenchman is perhaps the most perplexing player I’ve ever seen. He consistently makes absolutely world-class saves, being nominated for save of the month more often than not, yet he’s objectively not a great goalie.
His distribution and save stats are some of the worst in the Premier League this season, and it’s no surprise that the Hammers have looked much better when his Polish counterpart was in between the sticks.
He started brilliantly when coming in as the main man, but he’s slowly dwindled into being a liability who has absolutely no command of his defenders.
When someone like Kelleher is available for free, a Prem-proven shot stopper who’s entering his prime years, it just doesn’t make sense to not bring in someone as a replacement.
At the very least, Areola needs someone who’s going to fight him for his place in the starting XI. With how he’s been performing lately it won’t take a lot for it to be snatched from him.
