West Ham United need to sign a left-back this summer, Aaron Cresswell and Vladimir Coufal have left, and Emerson is expected to follow.
There has been a lot of talk about signing central midfielders, goalkeepers and strikers, but we haven’t really been linked with full-backs, and that could soon be a problem.
Aaron Cresswell has left the club after 11 years on a free transfer and rumours suggest Emerson has been deemed surplus to requirements. This could leave us with just Ollie Scarles as LB/LWB option going into next season and that can’t happen.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka can play there, but he’s also our only right back option. So, if one of those gets injured, we would be forced to play someone like Crysencio Summerville at wing-back. This makes at least two full-backs a real priority for Graham Potter this summer.
Long-term target Kyle Walker-Peters on a free transfer should be dead certain to happen, and it looked like it was going to be a couple of weeks ago, but the interest in the former Spurs defender seems to have cooled for some reason.
KWP can play on either side as a full-back or a wing-back, is homegrown and has only just turned 28. This would be a no brainer of a signing as he can play both sides. However, he would be more of a rotation option. If Emerson leaves, we need to sign a new starting left-back. Even if he doesn’t leave we should still sign one, as Potter clearly doesn’t rate him much.
The left-back market is quite short at the moment, There are players that aren’t playing much at bigger clubs like Zinchenko, Chilwell and Tsimikas that would be gettable. However, Graham Potter wants to start bringing in younger players.
Two left-backs we’ve been linked to previously could be names to look out for, Jayden Oosterwolde of Fenerbache and Nathaniel Brown of Frankfurt could be potential targets for Potter and Macauley.
