England international Angel Gomes is reportedly close to securing his next move having been heavily linked with West Ham and a Premier League switch in recent months.

There has been much speculation over the 24 year old and where his future lies in recent months. The Manchester United academy graduate and current Lille midfielder’s contract with the French side is due to expire at the end of this month.

A number of Premier League clubs as well as sides around Europe have kept a close eye on Gomes’ situation in a bid to try and secure his signature this summer. This includes West Ham, who have repeatedly been linked with the midfielder since January.

Graham Potter is said to be a firm admirer of Gomes. With the Hammers looking to revamp their midfield this summer, landing the Lille man on a free would have been good business as he could have slotted nicely in to West Ham’s midfield being a tidy operator on the ball. Also, at 24 years old, with West Ham looking to bring the average age of their squad down, it’s a move that would have made a lot of sense.

Despite this and Gomes being frequently linked with other Premier League sides such as Tottenham, in recent days, it has been widely reported that the 24 year old is close to sealing his next transfer. As per Alex Crook and others, Gomes is said to be on the verge of remaining in French football and signing for Marseille.

With the former Manchester United man said to have held talks with both West Ham and Tottenham, it appears the Lille midfielder has rejected the opportunity of a Premier League switch in order to continue his career in Ligue 1.

Losing out on a transfer target at the beginning of the summer window will be a disappointment for Graham Potter and West Ham’s recruitment team. This means the Hammers will have to pursue other targets, particularly as strengthening the midfield is of high priority this summer as the Hammers found themselves routinely overrun in the centre of the park for much of the 24/25 season.
