West Ham’s hunt for a striker continues as Potter’s side are linked with a move for AS Monaco and Switzerland striker Breel Embolo.

West Ham have been linked to a few Monaco players already this summer, midfielder Soungoutou Magassa is one of our top midfield targets and we have been in contact with red and whites over his signature.

Reports are now suggesting that the Hammers are also interested in their striker Breel Donald Embolo and a deal could be discussed during talks for French midfielder Magassa.

Embolo is a player that will be known by many from playing for Switzerland, the 28-year-old had England fans worried in the quarter final of Euro 2024 as his goal in the 75th minute gave the red crosses the lead, before Saka’s equaliser and England’s win on penalties.

I think the word to describe Embolo would be decent, he has always scored goals throughout his career, but he’s never really had a superb season. In 106 matches at Borussia Monchengladbach, Embolo scored 25 goals and provided 20 assists, a solid number but nothing remarkable.

The most goals he’s ever scored in a season was 14 in 22/23, his first season at Monaco. He missed the majority of the 23/24 season with a cruciate ligament tear. He come back from that injury pretty well this season, scoring 7 goals and providing 9 assists in 42 matches in all competitions.

Embolo is a good player, but he doesn’t have the goalscoring prowess we need in a striker this summer and signing him this summer would be rather underwhelming. He has a lot more to his game than scoring goals, the comparisons to Michail Antonio aren’t that far-fetched they both have similar characteristics as a striker.

If Embolo was coming in as a replacement for Antonio and we sign another striker it would make sense, however, with Fullkrug set to stay I struggle to see it happening. And we would be stupid going into next season with just Fullkrug and Embolo as our striker options when there are much better options. Lucas Stassin and Emanuel Emegha would be much better options for the Hammers and that’s just staying in Ligue 1.
