West Ham fans are in meltdown on social media as Marseille sign two Graham Potter targets on free transfers.

The Hammers have missed out on Burnley defender CJ Egan-Riley and Lille midfielder Angel Gomes as they opted for a switch to Ligue 1 side Marseille.

West Ham have been eyeing a move for England International Gomes since the end of last season when it clear he wasn’t going to renew his contract in France. It looked like the former Manchester United midfielder was going to return to England with a move to Tottenham Hotspur hotly tipped.

CJ Egan-Riley had a lot of interest, reports suggested he would be joining Liam Rosenior at Strasbourg, but he too has ended up in the South of France with Marseille.

There has been a lot of overreaction on social media with fans worried about us losing out on players to Marseille when we’ve got used to beating clubs of that level to signings and signing players from those clubs.

However, we aren’t where we were a couple of years ago when we signed players like Alvarez and Kudus. Also, Marseille are one of the most exciting teams in Europe and are playing Champions League football next season.

Roberto De Zerbi has them playing brilliant football with the likes of Mason Greenwood, Amine Gouiri and Adrien Rabiot shining as they finished second in the league behind treble winners Paris Saint-Germain.

Marseille is a much better place to play football than West Ham at the moment, we are all hoping that Graham Potter can get us performing, so we can be in the race for players like this again next summer.
