West Ham leading the race for experienced Premier League centre-back.

Although it was admittedly an improvement on the prior season, West Ham still had an awful defensive record during the last campaign. While there are many factors for this, you simply can’t not put some of the blame on the central defenders.

Given that Jean-Clair Todibo massively disappointed in his first season, Graham Potter is said to be keen to add another defender to his arsenal.

According to the Hammer’s former scout Mick Brown, that centre-back could be Joe Gomez.

“[Joe Gomez is] going to be a backup player again at Liverpool, but they’re keeping a close eye on things in case they decide they want to cash in,” he told  Football Insider.

“It will all depend on what they want to do because he’s still a part of their squad. If Liverpool sign another centre-back as it looks like they might do, he’ll be pushed even further down the pecking order.”

“West Ham aren’t the only interested club, he’s been linked to Everton and Leeds as well. If Liverpool decide to let him go, there will be a lot of clubs looking to bring him in.”

“My sources tell me that Potter wants to strengthen at the back, and he sees Gomez as a good option.”

“They’re keeping a close eye on his situation and if he is allowed to leave, I expect they’ll be ready to make a move.”
