Richard Rios is the perfect signing for West Ham United, and he is available for just £25m.
The Hammers are in desperate need of a midfield reshuffle this summer. We got completely run through on too many occasions last season, and new bodies need to come in to solve that.
There have been a lot of names linked to, from Josh Brownhill to Raphael Onyedika. But I think the ideal signing for Graham Potter is Richard Rios of Palmeiras.
The Colombian has been a star in Brazil and for his national team for a good couple of years, but he has now stepped it up to the world stage, shining in the Club World Cup. Palmeiras made it to the quarter-finals of the competition in America, being edged out by Premier League Chelsea through an own goal late on last night.
Richard Rios is exactly what we need to reshape our midfield. He can be the box-to-box ball carrier we’ve lacked since Declan Rice left, and he is also more than capable of dropping deep and controlling the tempo of a game with his passing and close control.
He is a workhorse in midfield with the legs to get around. This is something we’ve really lacked recently. You can’t really fault the effort of players like James Ward-Prowse and Edson Alvarez, but they just don’t have the legs we’ve needed, especially if we’re going to stick with a midfield two.
Rios has been on the radar of some big clubs over the past year, with Manchester United, Nottingham Forest showing interest before, as well as West Ham, Champions League finalists Inter Milan are also looking at him to replace Calhanoglu, who looks set to depart.
If the Hammers want the 26-year-old, we need to act fast, but we may not be able to because we have yet to make any sales. A move for Rios could be a huge risk, seeing as he has never played in a top league, but it could also be a huge loss if he ends up elsewhere. His skillset could make him perfect for Graham Potter’s system.
