19 year old striker Daniel Cummings’ move to West Ham has finally become official having been in the pipeline for several months.
In his time with the Scottish giants, Cummings amassed an excellent scoring record for the club’s B team having netted 38 goals in 58 games. He made one appearance for Celtic’s first team which came back in January against Aston Villa in the Champions League.
The expectations at Celtic are incredibly high. Breaking in to the first team at a club of that size is no easy feat, it appears as though Cummings did not want to wait for an opportunity at Celtic Park and feels as though he has a better opportunity to work his way into the first team plans at West Ham.
After his move to West Ham was announced, Speaking to the Club’s website, Cummings discussed how he was delighted to get the opportunity to join a Premier League side: “It feels amazing to join West Ham United, and it’s a dream come true. It’s every young footballers dream to play in the Premier League, so when West Ham came calling, it was too good to say no, and I’m looking forward to getting started.”
Cummings also described how he joined West Ham because he feels there is a “pathway to the first team, and that’s all you can ask for as a young player.”
This could well be a thinly veiled dig at Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers, after comments made by Rodgers about young players to Scottish radio shortly after Cummings had made his first senior appearance for the Club. The Celtic boss appeared to question the patience of some of the club’s younger players.
“People will look at the Club. The pathway. The pathway is here for any top young player. It’s whether you have the patience enough and the demands professionally to cope with being here, if not, then your representatives may take the chance to move you on and pick up a few extra quid somewhere else.” said Rodgers.
It’s up for debate whether or not Rodgers’ comments were aimed at Cummings. However, the young forward has made his stance clear, he has left Celtic and joined West Ham as he feels there is a better pathway to first team football with the Hammers. It is now down to Cummings to put the hard work in, prove his ability and show he has what it takes to break through at the top level.
