With West Ham wanting to strengthen their midfield options ahead of the 2025/26 season, Aston Villa’s Jacob Ramsey is a name that has emerged as a potential transfer target.
One thing that may be a concern for the Hammers is Ramsey’s injury history. The 24 year old spent several weeks of the 2024/25 season sidelined with a hamstring injury, one of a number he’s had in recent seasons.
Dr Rajpal Brar, who is a sports scientist that specialises in physical therapy, told West Ham Zone that the Club would certainly need to be mindful of these recurring injuries if they are seriously considering trying to bring the Villa midfielder to East London this summer.
“The club may take a closer look at his history of hamstring injuries, particularly with him suffering one of them this past season.” said Dr Brar, who went on to add: “It kept him out for a while so most certainly was a significant one. He’s suffered setbacks in the past too, so that’s something worth considering.”
Whilst there are things for West Ham to remain cautious over, there would certainly be upsides to signing Jacob Ramsey.
A big one would be his age. The Hammers need to bring in younger players this summer to reduce the average age of the squad. The Villa midfielder is still relatively early on in his professional career, and at 24, he fits the profile of a younger, long term option that West Ham are crying out for.
Ramsey also has plenty of top flight experience, with nearly 140 Premier League appearances to his name. Being English and having come through Aston Villa’s academy set up, the midfielder qualifies as a “home grown” player, an added bonus.
The 24 year old is capable of playing in both centre midfield and as a No. 10. His positional versatility, combined with his engine, ability on the ball and knack of creating chances mean he offers qualities that West Ham’s midfield has lacked.
Jacob Ramsey certainly presents an interesting proposition, the Aston Villa man could slot nicely into the Hammers midfield and would certainly strengthen their current options. However, his history of hamstring injuries add an element of risk that West Ham’s recruitment team would have to weigh up against his clear talent.
Additionally, some reports have suggested Villa would demand around £35-40 million for Ramsey. With West Ham’s hierarchy maintaining the Club have to offload players before they can begin their transfer business, Ramsey would certainly be out of the Hammers price range, at least for the time being.
