West Ham United are interested in a move for Juventus midfielder Douglas Luiz, according to Gazzetta

The Hammers are desperate to bring in a midfielder, and they appear to be interested in a move for former Aston Villa and Brazil’s Douglas Luiz. The 27-year-old had a great five seasons in Birmingham, but it was his final season that he really shone.

In 2023-24, Luiz scored 10 goals and provided 10 assists in 53 matches in all competitions, which earned him a huge €50m move to Juventus. However, it hasn’t worked out at all. He couldn’t get in the team under Thiago Motta, and the same theme continued when he was replaced with Igor Tudor.

The former Manchester City academy man played only 877 minutes in all competitions last season, putting up 0 goal contributions during that time. The Brazilian is eager to return to the Premier League and is said to be tempted by West Ham, who, according to Gazzetta, are ready to make a move.

The Bianchoneri want at least €40m for their midfielder, but they are willing to accept a substantial loan of around €10m with an obligation to buy for around €25-30m next summer. The Hammers want to sign him for a bit less, but nevertheless, negotiations are reportedly underway.

In terms of quality of player, Douglas Luiz would be an excellent signing, and is exactly the type of midfielder we need to sign. He can defend, progress the ball, and contribute to goals. He’s an all-rounder, and that’s exactly what we’ve missed since Declan Rice left. He can play as a 6, 8, and even a 10 if needed; that versatility would be very much appreciated by Graham Potter.

At 27, his age is slightly older than what Potter and Macauley hope to sign; they want to buy young and cheaper to develop them into brilliant players. But if we can get a player of this quality and stature in our current state, we’d be stupid to turn it down.
