West Ham Women have strengthened their coaching staff with the appointment of Steve Kirby as assistant manager ahead of the 2025/26 season.

Kirby joins the Hammers with a wealth of coaching experience in both the women’s and men’s game. He spent last season as head coach of Bristol City Women in the WSL 2, having previously served as a first team coach with Leicester City in the WSL. His coaching career also includes roles with Leicester’s men’s U18 side and MK Dons, where he worked in academy and development roles.

Discussing joining the Hammers on whufc.com ahead of the new season, Kirby described it as “an easy decision to make”. West Ham’s new assistant manager spoke of the opportunity to work under Rehanne Skinner and play his part in helping develop a squad that is on an “upward trajectory”.

Having faced off against Hammers boss Rehanne Skinner’s teams previously in his coaching journey, Kirby was full of praise for Skinner and the style of football her sides play. “”I’ve always admired the style in which Rehanne’s teams play and, as a competitor, I embraced the challenge of being in the opposite dugout to her.”

Now, being a part of West Ham’s coaching team, Kirby is eager to call upon his experience to help the Hammers kick on next season. “I’m now committed to using my knowledge and experience to help the players improve and move forwards in this new chapter together.” said Kirby.

West Ham manager Rehanne Skinner expressed her delight at the Club being able to bring in a coach with Kirby’s level of experience and knowledge of the women’s game. “I’m delighted to welcome Steve to the Club. Steve has a wealth of experience and, having worked in both the WSL and WSL 2 over the last few years, his knowledge of the women’s game will be a real asset to the group.”

Kirby will now begin working with the West Ham squad as preparations begin ahead of the 2025/26 season.
