West Ham United look set to announce the signing of Callum Wilson on a short-term deal this week, and West Ham fans aren’t happy.

Less than a couple of days after reports suggested our hunt for a striker was put on the back foot, Callum Wilson may become a Hammer later this week after the club offered him a low-cost contract until the end of this season.

This has led to what has been nothing short of a social media meltdown. I don’t think there has been one West Ham fan who’s happy with the move. The 33-year-old was a very good Premier League striker, but last season he really didn’t show that.

In over a decade in the Premier League, Wilson has scored 88 goals, including twelve against us; we are by far his favourite opponents. In his prime, he was quick, strong, and a great finisher. But he really isn’t that anymore.

In eighteen Premier League matches last term, Wilson failed to score a goal. He obviously wasn’t the first-choice striker with Alexander Isak scoring goals for fun, but to score 0 goals shows he is no longer the same player.

Wilson has always had injury problems; he tore his cruciate ligament two years in a row in 15/16 and 16/17, and has had a lot of hamstring injuries since. Last season, he missed 14 games with a hamstring injury and 15 games with a back injury.

With Niclas Fullkrug’s injury problems, it would be stupid to bring in another injury-prone and old striker, even if it’s on the cheap. Not only that, it goes entirely against Potter and Macauley’s aim of signing younger players to decrease the average age of the squad.

The only positive of this signing would be that if he plays for us, he can’t score against us. However, he hasn’t even scored in his last three matches against us, so maybe that says it all. He just isn’t as good as he once was.
